We reward our exceptional talent for the work they do every day.
We pay well. To keep Crew developing and incentivize exceptional performance, we provide a performance review for each Crew twice a year. On average, Crew have the potential to receive a 7%-10% annual increase.
We also give all Crew Members a 10%* discount on all products available in our stores. *The Crew Member discount has been increased to 20% through December 31, 2020.
We provide Crew Members with a great retirement plan. Trader Joe's currently makes a retirement plan contribution equal to 10% of annual compensation to eligible Crew Members—without any obligation for a Crew Member to make a matching contribution. The plan also allows Crew Members, at their discretion, to save additional amounts of pre-tax dollars. You are making an investment in us—we are making an investment in and for you.
We offer exceptional medical, dental and vision plans to eligible Crew Members. We currently cover approximately 83% of the insurance premium costs, keeping the Crew Member portion at a low cost (currently $85/month).
We offer paid time-off that increases with tenure. From hire, Trader Joe’s contributes 3.6% to 7.5% to each Crew member’s paid time-off account—or around 5 to 10 days a year. There’s no cap on accruals and the money is yours from the moment you earn it.
We promote based on performance, which means passion and dedication determines growth—78% of Mates (supervisors) started as Crew; 100% of Captains (store managers) were promoted from the Mate role.
We prioritize the development of our Crew Members. We don't pigeonhole Crew Members into "only running the register" or "only stocking the shelves"; our Crew engage in a variety of tasks and hold a range of responsibilities—running the register and stocking the shelves, of course; and also merchandising, creating signs, accepting deliveries, demoing products, engaging with our customers…
We encourage our Crew to grow their knowledge about food—we arrange for regular tastings of our products and supply the story behind every product we introduce.
